Comparison-Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Dream vs. Urban Outfitters Sea Dust

Back in my weekly update, I let you guys know that Urban Outfitters had a polish out that looked a lot like Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Dream. I was as excited about this news as anyone, so when I saw an Urban Outfitters on Sunday, I had to stop in. I picked up Sea Dust and another polish for $8.50.  Now that I've had a chance to compare Seafoam to Mermaid's Dream for myself, I feel pretty confident in saying that we have a dupe on our hands, people!

Were there any application differences between the two polishes? How did I come to have both? For answers to these questions and a few more pictures, keep reading!
So I'll go ahead my second question first. I do not own Mermaid's Dream. I am lucky to live by a high end department store with a huge variety of polish testers in their Deborah Lippmann section. I went there and painted my nails specifically for the purposes of doing a comparison.

As far as the application differences go, there was a bit of a distinction between Sea Dust and Mermaid's Dream. Mermaid's Dream was fairly opaque at 1 coat and definitely was only a 2 coater. Meanwhile, Sea Dust was fairly sheer on the 1st coat, and definitely needed a 2nd. I probably would have stopped there if I was just wearing Sea Dust on its own, but for the purposes of this comparison I went ahead and added a 3rd coat. There are some tiny differences that someone with  an eagle eye or a microscope might pick up, but otherwise the 2 polishes look the same. I'm so glad Urban Outfitters came out with this affordable version of Mermaid's Dream-whether you have the original or the dupe, it's one gorgeous polish!

*Edited to add: After wearing the polish out and about all day,it definitely seemed like Mermaid's Dream showed a bit more duochrome quality. When the sun shone on my nails at certain angles, they looked more turquoise blue-ish. Sea Dust didn't do this in the sunlight. Also, I think the glitter in Mermaid's Dream is a slightly brighter shade of blue and more densely packed, so that might also account for the differences the 2 polishes displayed.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm lucky to have that Nordstroms nearby-I have some more Lippmann comparisons planned for the future.

  2. Thanks for backing up my belief that I still need Mermaid's Dream even though I have Sea Dust.
